Keep Fucking Going

This is a note I wrote to myself. But I’m going to share it with you, because just like me, you look like you could use a little motivational kick in the ass, too.

Don’t worry that it’s about writing, because it’s really not. It’s really about anything that’s big, scary, hard. Maybe you’re working on your relationship with someone; Maybe you’re trying to lose weight; Pay down debt; Stay out of the snowbank on turn three of the ice track…

It doesn’t matter. This is for you.

Writing (the creative kind, not the deadline-driven-for-work kind) is scary. You obviously have no idea what the fuck you’re doing, and you know what? It doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter.

What does matter is showing up here to do the work. You put your ass in the chair, and do the work so that at some point, you’ll get better. You’ll keep going, and eventually even bore yourself, so then you’ll do something different, something better, and you’ll

Keep fucking going.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what it’s about. It doesn’t matter if “it” is a book or a long race or just life. It’s all huge and complex and scary and How Will I Ever Manage?

Keep fucking going.

The hard part is when you don’t want to keep going. Maybe your brain hurts. Maybe your feet are a lot numb and a little bloody. Your body aches from doing one thing for so long. There’s tasty food in the kitchen. There’re bills to pay. There’s the Internet (where someone is wrong!).

For a while, you can rely on other people to help you keep going. They’ll pick you up, dust you off, cheer you on, and “Go get ’em, Tiger!” But as you reach for bigger, harder-to-get goals, you’re going to have to figure out your own marching orders, your own schedule of when it’s OK to stop and when NO! I’m going to

Keep fucking going.

Also, you’re damn awesome, kid. Know that. But don’t let it stop you.

I’ll bet you know what I’m going to write next.
