Try Again Next Year, Dear Robin

Try again next year, dear robin.
We gave you the deck when
you made your nest in the middle of God and everyone
We watched as you sat on four tiny blue eggs
We cheered when your babies hatched,
all naked and cold in the big world.
We were impressed with your diligence
feeding those bottomless pits, too.
Then one afternoon, the old deaf dog had to pee
and after a while, she came to the back door
with a little spring in her step
and licking her chops.
Try again next year, dear robin.
